Singing Bowls
The art of making singing bowls originates from Tibet and Nepal where they are made from an alloy of metals to produce unique sounds for healing and ritual purposes. All of our singing bowls are chosen for their high quality which is why we only stock hand beaten bowls. We keep a vast range of singing bowls and if you can’t see what you are looking for here, please contact us and we’ll send you details of the rest of our stock. There are also a number of singing bowls on our Gift Item page which are sold together with a brocade cushion and handmade paper box. All singing bowls are sold with a partially suede beater, apart from the beaters for a few of the very tiny cast bowls. These very small beaters do not have a suede covering.
Gift Items/Singing Bowls in Boxes
We have put together a selection of gift ideas, most of them contain a singing bowl which is hand beaten, hand picked and chosen for its high quality. The gift box has been made by "Tibetan Handicraft & Paper", a Tibetan craft workshop in the Kathmandu valley who make paper products incorporating a high percentage of recycled material and coloured with vegetable dyes - all are ozone and chlorine free. They sponsor many children at a local school, provide the money for a teacher, and support a number of community projects.
Tingsha Cymbals
Traditionally, Tingsha have been used in rituals performed by Tibetan Buddhist monks. Today, tingsha are used along with singing bowls and other instruments in meditation, music and sound healing. When Tingsha cymbals strike each other they produce a clear, pure sound. The Tingsha we sell are individually handcrafted in the traditional method of sand-casting.
Meditation/Devotional Objects/Malas
Other items we sell include meditation cushions, bell and vajra, slate carvings, incense holders, prayer flags, wall hangings, tingshaw cymbals, malas, mala bags and prayer wheels. If there is anything you would like sourced in Nepal, please email us and we’ll do our best to find it for you. Please click to view these items.
Thangka Paintings
Tibetan thangka painting is a highly developed and important means of religious expression. The deities depicted in the paintings are visual embodiments of aspects of enlightend mind (ie, compassion, wisdom, power, etc) All thangka paintings purchased by Yakyak are of a very high quality and have been created by a master thangka painter who paints from his workshop in the Patan area of the Kathmandu valley. Each painting has been mounted in a simple black frame behind glass.
Cushions Covers
There is a wide range of cushion covers available from YakYak, some examples of which are available online. We stock traditional Tibetan meditation type cushions which are cotton, handmade and hand printed. The other type of cushions are from Rajasthan, India. These are also handmade in a traditional patchwork design. Please note, we only sell the cover, a cushion pad is not included in the price.
Singing Bowl Cushions/Beaters
All of our singing bowl cushions are hand made using silk brocade. They can be used for resting the singing bowl on when they are not in use, they can also be used for sitting the bowl on and gently hitting the bowl with a suede stick, producing a bell-like chime. We also seperatley sell the beater/sticks for playing the bowls. Many people who have bought bowls elsewhere have only been supplied with light weight wooden sticks that do not have half covered with suede. Using the suede part of the stick gives a different, softer tone to using the wooden end.
Incense/Incense Burners
We offer a number of pure Nepalese, Tibetan and Bhutanese incenses, which are handmade from natural ingredients, also the very popular Nag Champa. Traditionally, the Tibetan incense is used for puja offering and purification.
Wall Hangings & Bed Covers
Most of the wall hangings and bed covers purchased by YakYak come from India, only a small percentage from Nepal. Rajasthan is famous for the fabulous textiles that are to be found there. I was visiting an animal sanctuary and an organisation called Ladli, a charity which helps the street children of Jaipur. I had to buy some of the wall hangings and bed covers I found in Jaipur because of the fantastic work that goes into them and their vibrant colours.
Statues
We stock a variety of statues representing principal deities and Buddhas. They vary in both size and composition. They are all hand made, some being carved from various kinds of wood, while others are cast from different metals and alloys. Our statues are selected for the quality of finish, and only the most pleasing facial expressions are chosen.
Scarves
All of the scarves chosen by YakYak are sourced in Nepal or India. We stock a range of different fabrics, cotton, silk, linen, pashmina (cashmere and silk), and wool.
